Welcome to campus Wi-Fi! This quick FAQ helps you pick the right network, fix common hiccups, and understand our policies.

Which Wi-Fi should I use?

BU’s networks are segmented to give you a better, more secure experience based on your needs.
Network access passwords and connection instructions are available on myBU. After logging in, you’ll see the networks available to you, just click the one you want to join for step-by-step setup instructions.

Here’s a quick overview:

  • BU-Guest: Open to anyone on campus. This network is isolated from internal systems and is best for basic browsing or temporary access. It supports VPN use. Access is limited to 24 hours per session, and bandwidth is capped to ensure a stable experience for all users.
  • BU-Student: For enrolled students only. This network provides access to key internal systems like campus printers. For security reasons, VPNs are disabled here to maintain visibility and enforce our zero trust policy.
  • BU-Faculty/Staff: For faculty and staff devices only. This network provides secure access to internal university systems and administrative resources. Like BU-Student, VPNs are restricted here to maintain security and visibility in accordance with our zero trust policy.
  • BU-IOT: For gaming consoles, smart TVs, and other similar devices. Each device must be approved before connecting. Submit your request through the Device Access Request Form. This network does not connect to internal systems but offers the highest bandwidth on campus, optimized for multimedia, streaming, and gaming. It supports VPN use.

My device will not reconnect. What should I do?

  1. Forget the old network on your device.
  2. Reconnect and follow the prompts. On BU-Student you will enter the network password first, then your BU credentials on the following screen.
  3. Wait a moment. A short delay before it finishes connecting is normal.
Stuck? Double check that you typed both the network password and your BU username/password correctly, then try a quick device reboot.

Why is my VPN not working on BU-Student or BU-Faculty/Staff?

Personal VPNs hide traffic, which limits our ability to detect threats and respond quickly. To protect everyone and keep internal systems secure, they are disabled on these networks. If you need a VPN, connect through BU-Guest or BU-IOT. If job duties require VPN use on a secured network, reach out to IT for options.

How do I register a console, TV, or other smart device?

Fill out the Device Access Request Form (QR code or link on myBU). After approval, connect the device to BU-IOT using the instructions provided. Approval is usually quick, but submit early if you are setting up multiple devices.

Can I use my own router or hotspot in my dorm?

Allowed for now, but strongly discouraged. Personal routers and hotspots create wireless interference that hurts performance for others. Our systems monitor for them and the policy may change. Campus Wi-Fi is engineered and supported for you, please use it.

How do I report a network issue?

Email support@bluefield.edu or stop by IST in Lansdell Hall, first floor, Room 100. When emailing, include your location, the device you are using, and what you were trying to do when the issue occurred. Detailed info helps us fix things faster.
